Opera assisting
In this And Other Duties course, you will get to work with some of the best young musicians in the world as they prepare for staged performances of Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges. You will play an integral role in the rehearsal process, and will gain hands-on experience of opera conducting, leading both staging and orchestral rehearsals.
You will be guided by Karen and Tim in rehearsals that prepare the students for the arrival of the opera’s main conductor; at the end of the course, the And Other Duties conductors will share a full stage and piano rehearsal.
Course 2
June 30th–July 4th 2025
Building an Education Concert
You will receive detailed training and guidance on programming, writing, presenting and conducting family and education concerts. Working with a professional chamber ensemble, you will create your own education show which will be performed in Manchester schools to audiences of several hundred elementary school children.
There will be seminars and working sessions with senior management from the LSO, BBC Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata and, as with all And Other Duties courses, there will be networking events with representatives from other leading arts organisations.
You’ll learn about how to manage rehearsals, how to achieve the right balance when programming for young musicians, we’ll talk about safeguarding and how to work with your team, and we’ll discuss the difference between working with different age groups.
Our team of highly experienced industry leaders will advise you on how best to create and deliver education programmes with professional orchestras, using examples of concerts designed for the LSO, Hallé, CBSO and the BBC Philharmonic.
Each 4-day course costs £850 ($1100/€1000) and includes lunch and dinner.
Priority will be given to applications received on or before May 15th.
